Garth and Angie set up Whakaipo Lodge in 2013 having come from corporate backgrounds. Garth also established Adventure Shuttles, a small tour business specialising in transport, guiding and mountainbiking in the central North Island. He trained as a civil engineer and spent most of his professional career working in sales and general management, including executive roles in business units of large organisations.

Garth previously served as President of Taupo Home Hosts Association and has also served as Chair of the New Zealand Alpine Club in Wellington.
